2012 Youth Citizens’ Academy

The Meridian Township Police Department is currently seeking applicants for the 2012 Youth Citizens’ Academy. The Academy is offered to students from area high schools, and it is modeled after the Department’s very popular Citizens’ Academy. Participants will meet Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., from February 9th to March 22nd at the Meridian Township Public Safety Building.

This seven-week course allows students to receive instruction in areas such as use of force, crime scene investigation, traffic enforcement, K-9 operations, and alcohol enforcement. In addition to classroom instruction, students will be given hands-on opportunities with many of the tools used by law enforcement personnel. Students will observe K-9 detection and apprehension activities, use Fatal Vision goggles to observe the effects of alcohol on coordination, utilize various non-lethal weapons and training aids (PepperBall, Taser, Simunitions), dust surfaces for latent fingerprints, and engage in scenario-based decision making on the Firearms Training Simulator.
