Beware the "Unlock your debit card" text message

Photo from consumerist.com
CBS Chicago and Consumerist.com are reporting about a scam in which identity thieves are sending people text messages informing them that their debit cards have been locked.  To unlock the card the text tells you to call a number. The scammers are apparently identifying the text messages as coming from Chase and Fifth Third Banks. We know many people are still shopping for Christmas presents and would be very concerned were they to receive this message.

We are recommending that if you get any kind of message like this that you call your local branch of the bank and speak with them directly.  If it is a valid text alert from your bank they will be aware of the problem and will be able to help you, and if it is a scam you will be able to find out.
