1. Visual Distraction- Doing anything that makes you look away from the road.
2. Manual Distraction- Doing anything that makes you take your hands off the wheel.
3. Mental Distraction- Taking your mind off of driving.
Some distracting activities that we see a lot of:
- Talking on a cell phone
- Eating or drinking
- Using a GPS
- Grooming
Why do we care if you are doing something in your car that is not illegal, like eating or drinking? Take a look at these statistics:
- 20 percent of injury crashes in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving. (NHTSA).
- Of those killed in distracted-driving-related crashed, 995 involved reports of a cell phone as a distraction (18% of fatalities in distraction-related crashes). (NHTSA)
- Using a cell phone use while driving, whether it’s hand-held or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. (Source: University of Utah)
How many times are you in your car and are eating and/or talking on your cell phone? We lead busy lives and sometimes we have to multi-task, but let's not do it in our cars.
