Graduated Driver's License changes

We’ve recently fielded some phone calls regarding the new Graduated Driver’s License Level 2 restrictions.  It seems some are not sure exactly when they can drive under the new restrictions. The new restrictions went into effect on March 30, 2011.  The changes and modifications are as follows:

PA 268 of 2010 requires changes to modify and add new restrictions for a Graduated Driver License (GDL) Level 2. The new law will not allow GDL Level 2 drivers to operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 10:00 pm and 5:00am unless accompanied by a parent/guardian or a licensed driver over the age of 21 who is designated by the parent or legal guardian or when the driver is going to or from work. The new law will also limit passengers for GDL Level 2 drivers. GDL Level 2 drivers cannot have more than one passenger under the age of 21 while operating a motor vehicle unless the passengers are immediate family members or the passengers are going to or from school or a school sanctioned events.

A good source of information for parents about the G.D.L. system: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/gdl_parent_16316_7.pdf
