The Meridian Township Police Department is currently in search of applicants for
the 2015 Youth Citizens’ Academy. The Academy is open to students from surrounding high schools, and is modeled after the Department’s very popular Citizens’ Academy, hosted in the fall. The Academy will meet on Wednesday nights from February 18, 2015 - April 1, 2015 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in the Meridian Township Public Safety Building.
First presented in 2006, the seven week course allows students to receive instruction in the following areas:
• Use of Force
• Crime Scene Investigation
• K-9 Operations
• Traffic Enforcement
• Alcohol Enforcement
In addition to classroom instruction, students will be given the opportunity to interact with and use many of the tools law enforcement personnel operate everyday. Students will:
• Observe K-9 detection and apprehension activities
• Use “Fatal Vision” goggles to observe the effects of alcohol on coordination
• See various non-lethal weapons and training aids (PepperBall, Taser, Simunitions)
• Dust surfaces for latent fingerprints
• Engage in scenario-based decision making on the Firearms Training Simulator
The Academy helps nurture strong relationships between officers and students and provides an increased knowledge of police work.
